Monton ‘stone’ Bridge was built between 1759 and 1761 to carry Parrin Lane over the newly constructed Bridgewater Canal. This was a narrow hump backed bridge which was whitewashed to allow barge men to see it at night.
It was closed on Monday 28th December 1903 as it was too narrow and steep for the proposed electric tram car route. A temporary structure was put in place until the new ‘iron’ bridge with tram line was opened on 1st June 1905.
The Eccles, Tyldesley and Wigan Railway that opened in 1864 crossed over the road just after Monton Bridge. Monton Green railway station was not built until 1887 after local residents petitioned the railway company. The last trains ran on 5th May 1969 and the station and bridge were demolished not long after.
